Other <a href=\"http:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aiglefin\">French names<\/a> for the unsmoked fish include <em>aigrefin<\/em>, <em>\u00c2ne<\/em>, <em>\u00c2non<\/em>, <em>Bourricot<\/em> and <em>Saint-Pierre<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The French <em>\u00e9glefin\/aiglefin<\/em> comes from the Latin <em>aeglefinus<\/em>, which in made up of <em>aegle<\/em> from the Greek <em>\u03b1\u1f34\u03b3\u03bb\u03b7<\/em> (light, radiance, glory), and <em>finus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Haddock (<em>Melanogrammus aeglefinus<\/em>), is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haddock\">apparently<\/a> also known as offshore hake in English, and the word haddock is thought to come from the Middle English <em>haddok<\/em>, the Anglio-Norman <em>hadoc<\/em> and the Old French <em>hadot<\/em>, the origins of which are uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Another word I learnt last night was <strong>houblon<\/strong> [&#8216;ubl\u0254\u0303], which is French for hops (<em>humulus lupulus<\/em>), and I just like the sound of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night I discovered that the French word for haddock is \u00e9glefin or aiglefin, but when smoked it&#8217;s called haddock, which is also spelled hadock and hadot.
