It may have come from the game of hazard and the Old French <em>cinc<\/em> (five) and <em>sis<\/em> (six), the riskiest numbers to shoot for, which were either misheard as &#8220;six&#8221; and &#8220;seven&#8221;, or increased by one each as a form of exaggeration [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/at_sixes_and_sevens#English\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>Apparently in Australia, a state of confusion might be called <strong>all sixes and nines<\/strong>, the origins of which are not known [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/all_sixes_and_nines#English\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>In Chinese, certain numbers are also associated with disorder in the phrase <strong>\u4e71\u4e03\u516b\u7cdf<\/strong> [\u4e82\u4e03\u516b\u7cdf] (lu\u00e0nq\u012bb\u0101z\u0101o), which means chaotic, in disorder or muddled, or literally &#8216;confusion \/ state of chaos, seven, eight, dregs&#8217; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E4%BA%82%E4%B8%83%E5%85%AB%E7%B3%9F#Mandarin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A similar phrase is <strong>\u4e4c\u4e03\u516b\u7cdf<\/strong> [\u70cf\u4e03\u516b\u7cdf] (w\u016bq\u012bb\u0101z\u0101o), which means everything in disorder, in a hideous mess, obscene, dirty or filthy. The first character <strong>\u4e4c<\/strong> [\u70cf] (w\u016b) means crow, rook, raven or black, and the other characters are the same [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E7%83%8F%E4%B8%83%E5%85%AB%E7%B3%9F#Chinese\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There is also the phrase <strong>\u4e03\u4e0a\u516b\u4e0b<\/strong> (q\u012bsh\u00e0ngb\u0101xi\u00e0), which means at sixes and sevens, in a perturbed state of mind or in a mess, or literally &#8220;seven up eight down&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chinese\/dictionary?page=worddict&#038;email=&#038;wdrst=1&#038;wdqb=%E4%B8%83%E4%B8%8A%E5%85%AB%E4%B8%8B\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Hokkien or Southern Min, a phrase that associates seven and eight with confusion is <strong>\u6709\u4e03\u65e0\u516b<\/strong> [\u6709\u4e03\u7121\u516b] (\u01d4-chhit-b\u00f4-poeh), which means in a state of confusion, in a state of uncertainty, in a state of disorder, or in an awful mess, or literally &#8216;have seven not have eight&#8217; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E6%9C%89%E4%B8%83%E7%84%A1%E5%85%AB#Hokkien\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The words seven and eight also appear in the Chinese idioms: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u4e03\u5634\u516b\u820c<\/strong> (q\u012bzu\u01d0b\u0101sh\u00e9), which means a discussion with everybody talking at once, or literally &#8220;seven mouths, eight tongues&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E4%B8%83%E5%98%B4%E5%85%AB%E8%88%8C#Chinese\">source<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u4e03\u624b\u516b\u8173<\/strong> (q\u012bsh\u01d2ub\u0101ji\u01ceo), which means with many people lending a hand; chaotically, or literally &#8220;seven hands, eight feet&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E4%B8%83%E6%89%8B%E5%85%AB%E8%85%B3#Chinese\">source<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u4e03\u96f6\u516b\u843d<\/strong> (q\u012bl\u00edngb\u0101lu\u00f2), which means scattered here and there; in disorder; in confusion, or literally &#8220;seven zero, eight fall&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E4%B8%83%E6%89%8B%E5%85%AB%E8%85%B3#Chinese\">source<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is also an idiom in Japanese &#8211; <strong>\u4e03\u8ee2\u3073\u516b\u8d77\u304d<\/strong> (nana korobi ya oki) which means not giving up until succeeding, or the ups and downs of life, or literally &#8220;seven times falling down, eight times rising up&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E4%B8%83%E8%BB%A2%E3%81%B3%E5%85%AB%E8%B5%B7%E3%81%8D#Japanese\">source<\/a>]. It has a short form: <strong>\u4e03\u8ee2\u516b\u8d77<\/strong> (shichiten hakki), which means life has its ups and downs, and is used an encouragement to keep going no matter how tough it is.
