That doesn&#8217;t sound like so much fun. <\/p>\n<p><strong>To jounce<\/strong> means to jolt or shake, especially by rough riding or by driving over obstructions. It is possibly a blend \/ portmanteau of <strong>jolt<\/strong> and <strong>bounce<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/jounce#English\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>A <strong>jaunting car<\/strong> (see photo above) was a kind of low-set horse-drawn open vehicle, used in Ireland, in which the passengers ride sideways, sitting back to back. They are still used to give rides to tourists in some places, apparently, and the name is used for similar horse-drawn passenger vehicles [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/jaunting_car#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The origins of <strong>jaunt<\/strong> are uncertain &#8211; it&#8217;s possibly a version of <strong>daunt<\/strong> (to discourage, intimidate, overwhelm), which comes from Middle English <em>daunten<\/em> (to subjugate, overwhelm, domesticate), from Old French <em>danter, donter<\/em> (to tame), from Latin <em>domit\u014d<\/em> (to tame), from <em>dom\u014d<\/em> (to tame, conquer), from Proto-Italic <em>*doma\u014d<\/em> (to tame, subdue), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*demh\u2082-<\/em> (to domesticate, tame). [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/daunt#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words may include <strong>jaunce<\/strong> (to prance, frolic, jolt shake; a jaunt) in English [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/jaunce#English\">source<\/a>], and <strong>jaunder<\/strong> (gossip, to talk idly) in Scots [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/jaunder#Scots\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the word <strong>jaunty<\/strong>, which means airy, showy, dapper, stylish or ostentatiously self-confident, is not related to <strong>jaunt<\/strong>. Instead, it&#8217;s related to <strong>gentle<\/strong>, <strong>genteel<\/strong> and <strong>gentry<\/strong>, and comes from French <strong>gentil<\/strong> (helpful, kind, pleasant), from Old French <em>gentil<\/em> (noble, courteous), from Latin <em>gent\u012blis<\/em> (belonging to the same family, tribe, clan, etc), from <em>g\u0113ns<\/em> (clan, tribe), Proto-Italic <em>*gentis<\/em>, from Proto-Indo-European <em>*\u01f5\u00e9nh\u2081tis<\/em> (birth, production) from <em>*\u01f5enh\u2081-<\/em> (to produce, beget, give birth) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/jaunty#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.japanesepod101.com\/member\/go.php?r=759259&amp;i=b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/banners\/banner_japanesepod.jpg\" alt=\"The Fastest Way to Learn Japanese Guaranteed with JapanesePod101.com\" width=\"630\" height=\"83\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you like to go on a little jaunt?
