{"id":2365,"date":"2010-02-18T10:14:54","date_gmt":"2010-02-18T10:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=2365"},"modified":"2010-02-18T10:14:54","modified_gmt":"2010-02-18T10:14:54","slug":"croenlun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=2365","title":{"rendered":"Croenlun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They were talking about tattoos this morning on Radio Cymru and one of the presenters used the word <em>croenlun<\/em>, which I hadn&#8217;t heard before but could understand from the meaning of its component words &#8211; <em>croen<\/em> (skin) and <em>llun<\/em> (picture, image). This word doesn&#8217;t appear in any of my Welsh dictionaries so I suspect it isn&#8217;t very common &#8211; the usual Welsh word for tattoo is tat\u0175.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/tattoo.jpg\" align=\"right\" style=\"margin:0 0 0 10px;\" width=\"117\" height=\"155\" alt=\"Mysterious symbol tattoo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other Welsh words containing <em>croen<\/em> include <em>croendenau<\/em> (skin thin) &#8211; touchy sensitive; <em>croendew<\/em> (skin thick) and <em>croengaled<\/em> (skin hard) &#8211; thick-skinned, callous; and <em>croeniach<\/em> (skin healthy) &#8211; unhurt, unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>The English word tattoo comes from one of the Polynesian languages &#8211; perhaps the Tahitian and Samoan <em>tatau<\/em> or the Marquesan <em>tatu<\/em>, which mean &#8220;puncture, mark made on skin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The image on the right was sent in by a visitor to Omniglot who would like to know if anybody recognises the symbol. <\/p>\n<p>It looks like a tattoo and the symbol does look vaguely familiar to me, though I&#8217;m not sure where I&#8217;ve seen it before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They were talking about tattoos this morning on Radio Cymru and one of the presenters used the word croenlun, which I hadn&#8217;t heard before but could understand from the meaning of its component words &#8211; croen (skin) and llun (picture, image).
