I noticed it recently in my Italian lessons, and wondered where it came from. Black Panther, 2007\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It comes from Vulgar Latin <em>*stantia<\/em> (standing, stopping-place), from Latin <em>stantem<\/em> (standing, staying, remaining), from <em>st\u014d<\/em> (to stand, stay, remain), from Proto-Italic <em>*sta\u0113\u014d<\/em> (to stand), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*steh\u2082-<\/em> (to stand) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/stanza#Italian\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>stanza<\/strong> [\u02c8st\u00e6nz\u0259], which was borrowed from Italian, can also refer to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An apartment or division in a building (<em>architecture<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>A segment or portion of a broadcast devoted to a particular topic (<em>broadcasting<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>A period or interval into which a sporting event is divided (<em>sports<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is also used in computing.<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots include <strong>stance<\/strong>, <strong>stand<\/strong>, <strong>distant<\/strong>, <strong>estate<\/strong>, <strong>stable<\/strong>, <strong>stage<\/strong>, <strong>state<\/strong>, <strong>station<\/strong>, <strong>status<\/strong> and <strong>store<\/strong> in English, <strong>sawdl<\/strong> (heel) in Welsh, <strong>Staat<\/strong> (country, state) in German, and <strong>stam<\/strong> (tree trunk, stem, tribe, clan) in Dutch [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/steh%E2%82%82-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other words for <strong>room<\/strong> in Italian include <strong>sala<\/strong> and <strong>camera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sala<\/strong> can also refer to a hall, living room or cinema (movie theatre), and was borrowed from French <strong>salle<\/strong> (hall, room), which ultimately comes from PIE <em>*sel-<\/em> (human settlement, village, dwelling), via Middle and Old French, Frankish and Proto-Germanic.
