It comes from Old Spanish <em>muchedumne, muchidumne<\/em>, from Latin <em>multit\u016bdinem<\/em> (a great number [of people], multitude, numerousness, crowd, mob, throng), from <em>multus<\/em> (much, many), from Proto-Italic <em>*moltos<\/em> (much, many), from Proto-Indo-European *ml\u0325t\u00f3s (crumbled, crumpled), from <em>*mel-<\/em> (to worry, be late, hesitate) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/muchedumbre#Spanish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots possibly include <strong>mejor<\/strong> (better, best), <strong>muy<\/strong> (very), <strong>mucho<\/strong> (much, a lot of, many) and <strong>multitud<\/strong> (multitude, crowd, a lot, loads) in Spanish, <strong>multitude<\/strong> in English, and <strong>mieux<\/strong> (better, best) in French [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/multus#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, if you&#8217;re keen on crowds, you might like to <strong>darse un ba\u00f1o de multitudes<\/strong> (to mingle with the crowd) [<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/spanish-english\/darse+un+ba%C3%B1o+de+multitudes\">source<\/a>], or <strong>darse un ba\u00f1o de masas<\/strong> (to go on a walkabout) [<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/spanish-english\/darse+un+ba%C3%B1o+de+masas\">source<\/a>]. <strong>Un ba\u00f1o de masas<\/strong> can also mean &#8216;to walk into the crowd (by a famous person)&#8217; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/ba%C3%B1o_de_masas#Spanish\">source<\/a>]. This might attract <strong>una muchedumbre de admiradores<\/strong> (a crowd of admirers).<\/p>\n<p>I tend to avoid crowds, which isn&#8217;t difficult living in a small city in the wilds of north Wales.
