This is also the root of words for <strong>cacao<\/strong>, the main ingredient in chocolate (at least good chocolate), in many languages [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cacao#Spanish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Spanish, <strong>cacahuate<\/strong> is used in Honduras and Mexico, while <strong>cacahuete<\/strong> is used in Spain and El Salvador. Another word for peanut in Spanish is <strong>man\u00ed<\/strong>, which is used in most other Spanish-speaking countries. It was borrowed from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/taino.htm\">Ta\u00edno<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/man%C3%AD#Spanish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The origins of the word <strong>chocolate<\/strong> are not entirely clear. The English word was borrowed from the Spanish <strong>chocolate<\/strong>, and it&#8217;s thought that the Spanish word came from Classical Nahuatl. Possibly from <em>*xocol\u0101tl<\/em> (to make sour) and <em>\u0101tl<\/em> (water), or from a combination of the Yucatec Maya word <strong>chocol<\/strong> (hot) and the Classical Nahuatl <em>\u0101tl<\/em> (water) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/chocolate#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other English words that come from Classical Nahuatl include <strong>avocado<\/strong>, <strong>chia<\/strong>, <strong>chili<\/strong>, <strong>guacamole<\/strong>, <strong>haricot<\/strong> and <strong>tomato<\/strong>, as well as names such as <strong>Aztec<\/strong>, <strong>Guatemala<\/strong> and <strong>Mexico<\/strong>  [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:English_terms_derived_from_Classical_Nahuatl\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, in the southern USA peanuts are\/were known as <strong>goobers<\/strong>, and this word used to refer to people from Georgia and North Carolina, and to foolish, simple or amusingly silly people. <strong>Goober<\/strong> comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gullah_language\">Gullah<\/a>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/kongo.htm\">Kongo<\/a> word <em>ngub\u00e1<\/em> (peanut) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/goober\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/my.kualo.com\/uk\/go\/00572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.kualo.com\/rewards\/uk-unlimited2-468x60.gif\" width=\"468\" height=\"60\" border=\"0\"\nalt=\"Unlimited Web Hosting - Kualo\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the connection between chocolate and peanuts?
