{"id":23290,"date":"2024-02-23T21:00:07","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T21:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=23290"},"modified":"2024-02-23T21:00:09","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T21:00:09","slug":"various-verses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=23290","title":{"rendered":"Various Verses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know that there\u2019s a whole world out there beyond your screen?<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/53524435637\/in\/dateposted\/\" title=\"Bangor\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53524435637_9df91a75cb_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" alt=\"Bangor\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It may be hard to believe, but apparently it does exist, and I even venture out into it occasionally. <\/p>\n<p>What is this mythical place?<\/p>\n<p>It has various names &#8211; some call it <strong>IRL<\/strong> (in real life) or <strong>RL<\/strong> (real life). Others call it the <strong>physical world<\/strong> or <strong>meatspace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meatspace<\/strong>, which is also written <strong>meat-space<\/strong> or <strong>meat space<\/strong>, is used online (often derogatorily) to refer to \u201cthe physical world, as opposed to the virtual world of the Internet.\u201c It was coined as analogy with <strong>cyberspace<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/meatspace\">source<\/a>], and started to be used in the 1990s [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/wordplay\/what-is-meatspace\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>While writing this, I was thinking of other ways to refer to the real, physical world, and came up with <strong>realverse<\/strong> &#8211; an analogy of <strong>metaverse<\/strong> (see below). Apparently this word is already in use, at least to some extent. There are examples in this article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digi.city\/articles\/2022\/3\/24\/how-to-connect-metaverse-to-realverse\">How to Connect #Metaverse to #Realverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>-verse<\/strong> suffix is used quite a bit in English at the moment.
