{"id":23095,"date":"2023-10-06T13:46:03","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T13:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=23095"},"modified":"2023-10-07T12:17:59","modified_gmt":"2023-10-07T12:17:59","slug":"gaga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=23095","title":{"rendered":"Gaga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night some actual French people came to the French conversation group &#8211; a couple (Giles et Carmen) from Saint-\u00c9tienne in the southeast of France who are friends of a friend.<\/p>\n<p>One interesting thing they said is that there is a local form of speech unique to Saint-\u00c9tienne and the surrounding area which they refer to as <em>patois<\/em>. It was an industrial city and a major coal mining centre, and has become a centre for design [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-%C3%89tienne\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The population apparently comes from many different places, so the local speech includes words from various regional forms of speech. The city is named after Saint Stephen, a.k.a. <em>Sanctus Stephanus de Furano<\/em> (Saint-\u00c9tienne of Furan)  [<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-%C3%89tienne\">source<\/a>], and the local people are known as <em>St\u00e9phanois<\/em> (masculine) and <em>St\u00e9phanoises<\/em> (feminine). So perhaps the local dialect could be called <em>St\u00e9phanais<\/em> (Stephenish)?<\/p>\n<p>I should have done this before, but I just searched for \u201c<em>patois de Saint-\u00c9tienne<\/em>\u201d and discovered that it does have a name (several, in fact): <em>le gaga<\/em>, <em>le parler gaga<\/em>, <em>le parler st\u00e9phanois<\/em> or <em>l\u2019arpitan st\u00e9phanois<\/em> in French, and <em>Parl\u00e2 Gaga<\/em> in the language itself.
