In the title of this post I use <strong>chez nous<\/strong> to indicate we are in the world of Omniglot.<\/p>\n<p>Other meanings include: \u2018in or among a group of people or things of the same type\u2019, e.g. <strong>chez les chiens<\/strong> = \u2018among dogs\u2019, or \u2018in the work of an author or artisit\u2019 &#8211; <strong>chez Baudelaire<\/strong> = \u2018in Baudelaire&#8217;s work\u2019 [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/chez#French\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It has been borrowed into English and just means \u2018at the home of\u2019 [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/chez#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chez<\/strong> comes from the Middle French <em>chez<\/em> (in the house\/home of), from the Old French <em>chies<\/em> (house), from the Latin <em>casa<\/em> (hut, cottage, cabin, small farm, dwelling, house), the origins of which are uncertain [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/casa#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The French word <strong>case<\/strong> [kaz], which means a box or a square in a board game, and used to mean a hut, cabin or shack, comes from the same roots, as do words like <strong>casino<\/strong> in English (via Italian), and <strong>casa<\/strong>, which means house in most Romance languages [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/case#French\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another word for house in Spanish is <strong>hogar<\/strong> [o\u02c8\u0261a\u027e], which appeared in my Spanish lessons today and inspired this post. It also means fireplace, hearth, fireside, furnace, home, home life, family life, housekeeping, homeland or household.<\/p>\n<p>Is it used more in some Spanish-speaking countries than in others?<\/p>\n<p>It comes from the Old Spanish <em>fogar<\/em>, from the Vulgar Latin <em>foc\u0101ris<\/em>, from the Latin <em>focus<\/em> (fireplace, hearth, brazier, house, family), the origin of which is uncertain [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/hogar#Spanish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words in Spanish include <strong>hogare\u00f1o<\/strong> (home, family, fireside; (<em>of a person<\/em>) home-loving, stay-at-home), <strong>hoguera<\/strong> (bonfire, blaze) and <strong>hogaraza<\/strong> (large loaf, cottage loaf).<\/p>\n<p>Related words in other languages include <strong>focus<\/strong> and <strong>foyer<\/strong> in English, words for fire in Romance languages, such as <strong>fuego<\/strong> in Spanish and <strong>feu<\/strong> in French [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/focus#Latin\">source<\/a>], and a Greek word for brazier, <strong>\u03c6\u03bf\u03c5\u03c6\u03bf\u03cd<\/strong> [fu\u02c8fu], via Turkish and Italian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%CF%86%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%86%CE%BF%CF%8D#Greek\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French word chez [\u0283e] is used to mean \u2018to, at, in or into a home, office etc\u2019.
