I\u2019m staying in Glasgow that night, then on Sunday I\u2019ll travel by train to Mallaig along the West Highland Line &#8211; one of the most spectacular train journeys I know of. From Mallaig I\u2019ll take a ferry over to Armadale on the Isle of Skye, then a bus to Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig (SMO), the Gaelic college where I\u2019ll be doing a course in Scottish Gaelic songs.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/41591968980\/in\/album-72157687548063075\/\" title=\"Glenfinnan \/ Gleann Fhionnain\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1821\/41591968980_4c7fa931f0_z.jpg\" alt=\"Glenfinnan \/ Gleann Fhionnain\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<em>Glenfinnan \/ Gleann Fhionnain &#8211; one of the places you pass by on the West Highland Line<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been to SMO many times before to do simliar courses, and am looking forward to it very much. Although the course is taught in English, there will be plenty of opportunities to speak Scottish Gaelic, and probably other languages. So, for the past few months, I\u2019ve been brushing up my Gaelic on Duolingo.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/42480878685\/in\/album-72157684665806711\/\" title=\"Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1762\/42480878685_b040021284_z.jpg\" alt=\"Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<em>Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be travelling from Glasgow with a Dutch friend I met back in 2019 when we  both did a Gaelic song course at SMO. We\u2019ve kept in touch ever since, and she, her husband and daughter came to visit me in 2022. When we met, I had only a basic knowledge of Dutch &#8211; now I can understand and read it quite well, and speak and write it to some extent. My Dutch friend has learnt Welsh and Scottish Gaelic, with a little help from me, and Duolingo.<\/p>\n<p>On the way home I\u2019ll stay with my mum for a few days, and we\u2019ll be celebrating my birthday on 9th April.<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019m away, I probably won\u2019t have much time to update Omniglot, or to write blog posts or make podcasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday (1st April), I\u2019m going to Scotland for a week.
