I discovered recently that in Japanese such areas are known as <strong>\u6b69\u884c\u8005\u5929\u56fd<\/strong> (hok\u014dsha tengoku) or literally &#8220;pedestrian paradise&#8221; or &#8220;pedestrian heaven&#8221;, which sounds pretty good to me.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/47741487@N06\/48779056921\/in\/photolist-nDYmRw-uBoY1G-8rc4gy-2hjrqbM-8rc2nW-GRjR2n-ajthnf-ajquft-o2Eoyj-6SWrdD-8qg8sJ-qcpYxs-MXz8D-6mBU8Y-2jCc7GJ-jvuooZ-3WuFF-a2Fb1g-pKYwnr-8rc43Y-6zP4Lw-7v7e7W-p6AHXi-26uaxo-9FmArE-xxr4w-29HhGY-29Hhbh-4aKSBE-5VfoBw-4aFQ6e-5EJrQh-4aFQhk-RF365M-29Hf8q-ana1ak-an9YQp-bwBGsz-dQ2Lf3\" title=\"\u6b69\u884c\u8005\u5929\u56fd\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48779056921_435b79b7f9_z.jpg\" alt=\"\u6b69\u884c\u8005\u5929\u56fd\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The kanji in this expression can be broken down as follows: <strong>\u6b69<\/strong> (ho) = step, stride;  <strong>\u884c<\/strong> (k\u014d) = going, travelling, journey; <strong>\u6b69\u884c<\/strong> (hok\u014d) = walk, walking; <strong>\u6b69\u884c\u8005<\/strong> (hok\u014dsha) = pedestrian, walker; <strong>\u5929<\/strong> (ten) = sky, heaven, God; <strong>\u56fd<\/strong> (kuni) = country, state, region; <strong>\u5929\u56fd<\/strong> (tengoku) = paradise, heaven [<a href=\"https:\/\/jisho.org\/search\/%E6%AD%A9%E8%A1%8C%E8%80%85%E5%A4%A9%E5%9B%BD\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Such areas are rather boringly known as <strong>pedestrian zones<\/strong>, <strong>pedestrian malls<\/strong>, <strong>auto-free zones<\/strong>, <strong>car-free zones<\/strong> oe <strong>pedestrian precincts<\/strong> in English  [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedestrian_zone\">source<\/a>]. Other names are probably available. It would be much more fun to call them <strong>pedestrian paradises<\/strong> though, don&#8217;t you think?<\/p>\n<p>Bangor High Street is partially pedestrianised, although delivery drivers and people with disabilities are allowed to drive on the pedestrian part between 4:30pm and 10am each day. These restrictions are rarely enforced, and anybody who wants to seems to drive along it and park wherever during those times. A pedestrian precinct is known as a <strong>man cerddwyr<\/strong> in Welsh, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have such areas where you live? What do you call them?
