{"id":22071,"date":"2022-03-31T12:40:10","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T12:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=22071"},"modified":"2022-03-31T12:40:11","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T12:40:11","slug":"unapologetic-accents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=22071","title":{"rendered":"Unapologetic Accents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-60912374\">story on the BBC News<\/a>, a performance of Shakespeare&#8217;s <em>As You Like It<\/em> wasn&#8217;t to the taste of one member of the audience at the Theatre Royal in York, who objected to Yorkshire accents being used, left during the performance and later asked for a refund.<\/p>\n<p>The company responsible for the play, Northern Broadsides, said that its performances contained &#8220;unapologetic northern voices&#8221;, and the manager of the theatre apparently said &#8220;That&#8217;s Yorkshire accents, right here in Yorkshire&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a trailer for the performance:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u2pgPHRuId0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What is the world coming to when a theatregoer is subjected to northern accents in a Shakespeare play?<\/p>\n<p>As everybody knows, Shakespeare should be performed with Received Pronounciation (RP), not with any other accent. After all, that&#8217;s how actors in Shakespeare&#8217;s time spoke, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Well no, English sounded it bit different back then, and many rhymes and puns in Shakespeare work in reconstructed Original Pronunciation (OP), but not in RP.
