The name <strong>Brittany<\/strong> comes from the same root [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Britain\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Until the 1st century BC Britain was known as <strong>Albion<\/strong> in Latin, which comes from the Proto-Celtic <em>*Albi\u016b<\/em> (luminous world, upper world, high mountain, alp, alpine pasture, Britain), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*alb\u02b0\u00f3s<\/em> (white) &#8211; possibly refering to the white chalk cliffs along the south coast of Britian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Albion\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>After the Roman conquest of Britain in 43 AD, the name <em>Britannia<\/em> was used to refer to the Roman province of Britain, which consisted of what is now England and Wales and part of southern Scotland [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Britannia\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Welsh, Britian is referred to as <strong>Ynys Prydain<\/strong> (The Island of Britain) or <strong>Prydain Fawr<\/strong> (Great Britian). These words, along with <strong>Prydyn<\/strong> (Scotland, (land of the) Picts), come from the same Proto-Brythonic root as Britain [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Prydain\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Cornish, Britain is <strong>Breten<\/strong> and Great Britain is <strong>Breten Veur<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornishdictionary.org.uk\/#Britain\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Breton, Great Britain is <strong>Breizh-Veur<\/strong> and Brittany is <strong>Breizh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish name for Wales is <strong>An Bhreatain Bheag<\/strong> (&#8220;Little Britain&#8221;), while Great Britain is <strong>An Bhreatain Mh\u00f3r<\/strong>, and Brittany is <strong>An Bhriot\u00e1in<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Breatain_Bheag\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Scottish Gaelic, <strong>A&#8217; Bhreatainn Bheag<\/strong> is Brittany, Wales is <strong>a&#8217; Chuimrigh<\/strong>, which comes from the Welsh name for Wales, <strong>Cymru<\/strong> and Great Britain is <strong>A&#8217; Bhreatainn Mh\u00f3r<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Breatain_Bheag\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The word Britain is used to refer to the island of Great Britain, and is also to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or UK.
