French equivalents of being on the wagon include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>s&#8217;abstenir de boire (de l&#8217;alcool)<\/strong> = to abstain from drinking (alcohol)<\/li>\n<li><strong>arr\u00eater de boire<\/strong> = to stop drinking<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00eatre au r\u00e9gime sec<\/strong> = to be on a dry diet<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00eatre sobre<\/strong> = to be sobre<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00eatre clean<\/strong> = to be clean<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00eatre sur le wagon<\/strong> = to be on the wagon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you <strong>fall of the wagon<\/strong> (go back to drinking), then you could say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>replonger (dans l&#8217;alcool)<\/strong> = to dive\/plunge back (into alcohol)<\/li>\n<li><strong>se remettre \/ recommencer \u00e0 boire<\/strong> = to start drinking again<\/li>\n<li><strong>rechuter<\/strong> = to relapse<\/li>\n<li><strong>tomber du wagon<\/strong> = to fall from the wagon<\/li>\n<li><strong>craquer<\/strong> = to snap, be unable to resist<\/li>\n<li><strong>d\u00e9railler<\/strong> = to derail, go off the rails, go off track<\/li>\n<li><strong>avoir la gorge en pente<\/strong> = to have a sloping throat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In English, the expression <strong>to be on the wagon<\/strong> usually means<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;abstaining from drinking any alcoholic drink, usually in the sense of having given it up (as opposed to never having partaken); teetotal&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It can also means &#8220;Maintaining a program of self-improvement or abstinence from some other undesirable habit.&#8221; (such as smoking).<\/p>\n<p>It was apparently coined in the USA and was originally &#8216;on the water-cart&#8217;, and became &#8216;on the water-wagon&#8217; the &#8216;on the wagon&#8217;. It referred to carts (like the one pictured above) that were used to hose down dusty roads.
