In some cases the meanings are similar but subtly different, in other cases they&#8217;re completely different.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shengdianye\/48430849912\/in\/photolist-cpBTD9-6YWicE-cah1K-dW3j8y-2gME4Cx-2j769Gg-4BPGTG-boqNVx-2gMELnE-2gMELSN-2gMELfR-2gMEMe9-4BKquT-2gME4sY-2gMEM5m-2gME4gk-2gMELP1-2gME3Xz-2gME3U3-fv7RBM-2gME4cc-2gME3Pi-2gMELsE-2m6oYra-caby1-ToL4u8-2ewMrKy\" title=\"Tokyo Tower \u6771\u4eac\u9435\u5854\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48430849912_0984058e1c_z.jpg\" alt=\"Tokyo Tower \u6771\u4eac\u9435\u5854\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>For example, in Mandarin Chinese \u9ad8 (g\u0101o) means tall or high (\u9ad8\u7684 g\u0101ode), or senior (\u9ad8\u7ea7\u7684 g\u0101oj\u00edde), while in Japanese \u9ad8 (taka), means quantity, amount (of money), volume or number, \u9ad8\u3044 (takai) means high, tall, expensive, above average or loud, and \u9ad8 (k\u014d) means high (school).<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese word for expensive is \u8d35 [\u8cb4] (gu\u00ec), which also means valuble. In Japanese this character, \u8cb4 (ki), means your, and indicates high rank, status, love or respect. Or when it&#8217;s pronounced <em>mochi<\/em> it means lord, god, goddess, and is used in honorific title for deities and high-ranking people. One Japanese word for you is \u3042\u306a\u305f (anata), which is usually written in hiragana, but can be written with the kanji \u8cb4\u65b9. In very formal written Chinese \u8d35\u65b9 [\u8cb4\u65b9] (gu\u00ecf\u0101ng) can be used to mean you.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese word for cheap is \u5b89\u3044 (yasui), while the same character in Chinese, \u5b89 (\u0101n), means quiet or safe. The Chinese word for cheap is \u4fbf\u5b9c (pi\u00e1n\u200byi), which in Japanese is pronounced <em>bengi<\/em> and means convenience, accommodation, advantage, benefit or expediency\u200b.<\/p>\n<p>The character \u4fbf is also pronouned <em>bi\u00e0n<\/em> in Mandarin, and means convenient, convenience and to excrete. It appears in the word \u4fbf\u5229 (bi\u00e0nl\u00ec) = convenient, to faciliate, which also exists in Japanese as \u4fbf\u5229 (benri) meaning convenient, handy or useful.<\/p>\n<p>The character \u5229 (l\u00ec) means sharp, advantageous, interest or to profit in Mandarin. In Japanese it&#8217;s pronounced <em>ri<\/em> and means advantage, benefit, profit or interest\u200b. It appears in the word \u5229\u76ca (l\u00ecy\u00ec \/ rieki), which means benefit in Mandarin, and profit or gains in Japanese, and also in \u5229\u5bb3 (l\u00echai \/ rigai) which means terrible in Mandarin, and advantages and disadvantages in Japanese. Which should not be confused with \u5389\u5bb3 [\u53b2\u5bb3] (l\u00echai), which means terrbile, terribly or awesome, and is used as a general intensifier in Mandarin. The equivalent in Japanese is \u7d20\u6674\u3089\u3057\u3044 (subarash\u012b).<\/p>\n<p>There are many more.
