{"id":21327,"date":"2021-08-27T11:28:26","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T11:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=21327"},"modified":"2021-09-13T12:19:29","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T12:19:29","slug":"skip-to-the-bin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=21327","title":{"rendered":"Skip to the Bin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I discovered that a French word for <strong>skip<\/strong> is <strong>benne<\/strong> [b\u025bn], which also means cable car, cable way, dumpster, bucket, bin, barrow or dump truck [<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/french-english\/benne\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/51440356961\/in\/dateposted\/\" title=\"Skip\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51440356961_3b5362f8b8_z.jpg\" alt=\"Skip\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It comes from the Latin word <em>benna<\/em> (a wagon of wicker or basket-work &#8211; see below), which comes from the Gaulish word <em>benn\u0101<\/em> [ben\u02d0a\u02d0] (carriage), from the Proto-Indo-European word <em>*b\u02b0end\u02b0-<\/em> (to bind, bond), which is also the root of English words such as <strong>band<\/strong>, <strong>bandage<\/strong>, <strong>bend<\/strong>, <strong>bin<\/strong>, <strong>bind<\/strong>, <strong>bond<\/strong> and <strong>bundle<\/strong>, and also the Welsh word <strong>ben<\/strong> (cart, wagon, carriage), and the Italian word <strong>benna<\/strong> (bucket, grab) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/benne#French\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/benna.jpg\" alt=\"Benna\" width=\"563\" height=\"232\"><br \/>\n<em>Similar wagons are still used in parts of Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. In Beligum they are known as banne, and they are benne in Switzerland. They will use a truck to take away all the detritus from the work in my garden. Fortunately I was able to cancel the booking and get a refund.
