The English word <strong>shoot<\/strong> comes from the same root [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/schutten#Dutch\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words include <strong>beschutting<\/strong> (shelter, cover, board) and <strong>schuttingtaal<\/strong> (obscene \/ foul language).<\/p>\n<p>Other Dutch words for fence include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>afrastering<\/strong> = fence, lattice, barricade &#8211; <em>any kind of fence of wooden, metal, wire or mesh<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>heg<\/strong> = hedge, fence, hedgerow &#8211; <em>hedge or wooden fence<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>hek<\/strong> = fence, gate &#8211; <em>wooden or metal fence with spaces between the upright parts<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>hekwerk<\/strong> = fence, fencing, trellis &#8211; <em>any type of fence<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>heler<\/strong> = fence &#8211; <em>middleman for transactions of stolen goods<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>omheining<\/strong> = fence, enclosure, perimeter &#8211; <em>any type of fence<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The notes are based on Google image searches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, someone who remains neutral, does not have an opinion about something, or does not want to commit to something is known as a <strong>fence sitter<\/strong>, or someone who <strong>sits on the fence<\/strong>. One equivalent in Dutch is <strong>op het hek te zitten<\/strong> (&#8220;to sit on the fence\/gate&#8221;).
