It comes from <strong>sturen<\/strong> [\u02c8sty\u02d0r\u0259(n)] (to steer, guide, send), and <strong>knuppel<\/strong> [\u02c8kn\u028fp\u0259l], which means a club, cudgel or other blunt instrument, and also a clown, lout or awkward individual [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/stuurknuppel\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sturen<\/strong> comes from the Middle Dutch <em>sturen<\/em> (to steer, direct, lead), from the Old Dutch <em>stiuren<\/em>, from the Proto-Germanic <em>*stiurijan\u0105<\/em> (to direct, steer).
