It could be translated literally as a &#8220;little cup of comfort&#8221; or a &#8220;little cup of solace&#8221;. Cup of joe<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bak<\/strong> means a bin, box, crate, tray or tub; a cup or mug; a jail, slammer or prison (slang), or a car. It comes from the French word <strong>bac<\/strong> (ferry, vat), from the Old French <em>bas\/bac<\/em> (flat boat), possibly from the Vulgar Latin <em>*baccu<\/em> (container), from the Latin <em>bacar<\/em> (kind of wine glass). Or from a Celtic or Germanic word [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bak#Dutch\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some related words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>afvalbak = rubbish bin, trashcan, dustbin<\/li>\n<li>bloembak = flower pot, planter, window box, flower tub<\/li>\n<li>engelenbak = the highest box at a theatre (&#8220;angel box&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>glasbak = bottle bank<\/li>\n<li>ragbak = a run-down car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Troost<\/strong> means comfort or consolation. It comes from the Middle Dutch <em>troost<\/em>, from the Old Dutch <em>tr\u014dst<\/em>, from the Proto-Germanic <em>*traust\u0105<\/em> (shelter, help, aid, trust, confidence, alliance), from <em>*traustaz<\/em> (firm, strong), from thge Proto-Indo-European <em>*deru-\/*drew-\/*dr\u016b-<\/em> (to be firm, hard, solid, tree)  [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/troost#Dutch\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The English words <strong>trust<\/strong> and <strong>tryst<\/strong> come from the same Germanic root, as do the German word <strong>Trost<\/strong> (consolation), the Swedish word <strong>tr\u00f6st<\/strong> (comfort, consolation, dummy \/ pacifier), and related words in other languages [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/traust%C4%85\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This week some of the lockdown restrictions were lifted here in Wales, and caf\u00e9s are open again, at least for takeaways. Yesterday I saw a long queue of people outside a caf\u00e9, probably waiting for their <strong>bakjes troost<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the beforetimes I did go to caf\u00e9s now and then for a cup of hot chocolate or herbal\/fruit tea, maybe a pastry, and a change of scenery.
