{"id":20545,"date":"2021-02-08T12:28:43","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T12:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=20545"},"modified":"2021-02-08T12:28:44","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T12:28:44","slug":"sniding-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=20545","title":{"rendered":"Sniding Wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Dutch friend included the expression <strong>sniding wind<\/strong> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/femke.van.gent\/posts\/10223264388109816\">poem<\/a> she wrote today:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/teabythesea.jpg\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\" alt=\"Language quiz image\" width=\"250\" height=\"238\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tea by the sea<br \/>\nA sniding wind<br \/>\ncomes from the east<br \/>\nIt blows through<br \/>\nAll my layers<br \/>\nMaking my hands<br \/>\nGo cold and colder<br \/>\nWhite frotty waves<br \/>\nBlack seaweed<br \/>\nPink tea gone cold too<br \/>\nQuick rush back home<br \/>\nOn my cloggerdy clogs<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1581234615343485\/\">Tea by the sea poems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After writing it, she realised that <strong>sniding wind<\/strong> was an Anglified version of the Dutch expression <strong>snijdende wind<\/strong> (cutting wind).<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>sniding<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t exist in English, the word <strong>snide<\/strong> [sna\u026ad] does, and means &#8220;disparaging or derisive in an insinuative way&#8221; and &#8220;tricky, deceptive, false, spurious, contemptible&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/snide\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snide<\/strong> comes from <strong>snithe<\/strong> [sn\u028c\u026a\u00f0 \/ sna\u026a\u00f0] (sharp, cutting, cold, piercing (wind\/weather)), from the Middle English <em>snithen<\/em>, from the Old English <em>sn\u012b\u00fean<\/em> (to cut, lance, hew, reap, mow), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*sn\u012b\u00fean\u0105<\/em> (to cut), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*sneyt-<\/em> (to cut) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/snithe#English\">source<\/a>].
