For example, Hij haat me en ik sloof me uit = He hates me and I&#8217;m slaving for him [<a href=\"https:\/\/context.reverso.net\/translation\/dutch-english\/sloof\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>sloof<\/strong> (drudge) might wear a <strong>sloof<\/strong> (apron) and <strong>sloffen<\/strong> (slippers) as they <strong>slip<\/strong> (slip) around their <strong>sloffige<\/strong> (dusty) house seeking a <strong>sloop<\/strong> (pillowcase) and trying to avoid a <strong>slop<\/strong> (bad situation) and trying not to fall <strong>in slaap<\/strong> (asleep).<\/p>\n<p>There are probably plenty of other words beginning with the pleasing combination <strong>sl<\/strong> in Dutch &#8211; there are certainly plenty in English &#8211; slip, slap, slop, sloop (from the Dutch sloep), slide, sleep, and so on.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sifter\/180006129\/in\/photolist-gUzxX-9UatXF-7sVcto-bF6YPi-6eqd9L-Fp3FB-2k8hiX1-9x3UuW-5LfYzA-2igjPxb-4E6iQu-2hZasYk-d3XPC-o4pNxX-o4oGmd-NaSsV6-47VtaW-6gSdYM-7ZV2zy-oHM9B6-292joh-4Jz4qm-ap31oC-9BRRqS-fL8uy-6CDqXB-8FNHt-a5MomR-aSMWDB-c4QqeJ-4vU2CQ-Fp3Fx-zR6wN-oUBxA-4ZuN2o-6Xj33s-HzouJ-M4DJR-dUj9cn-WS1kua-6byDc3-CBtX1-CBtXa-9kYUTu-kmS8gW-CBtWS-5zobzp-56TC3s-yFUZT-7VHchT\" title=\"No Slovenly Dressers Please\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/49\/180006129_4e2ca722b6_z.jpg\" alt=\"No Slovenly Dressers Please\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>sloven<\/strong> [\u02c8sl\u028cv\u0259n] means a habitually dirty or untidy man or boy; a low, base, lewd person, and used to mean an immoral woman. It comes from the Middle Flemish <em>sloovin<\/em> (a scold), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*slup-<\/em>.
