It comes from <strong>aardrijk<\/strong> (earth, world) and <strong>kunde<\/strong> (expertise, skill, ability), so could be translated literally as &#8220;earth-skill&#8221; or &#8220;world-expertise&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/aardrijkskunde\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kevinmgill\/16530938850\/in\/photolist-SgEn2s-rbMoc5-rbNSSs-6EwuqM-vcKJwv-WTb3tH-XVLGmr-GuJ1o4-FpJf6W-pn7fi-8je1YE-eTBmzs-RACw6r-xRFndh-7rjJG3-ESRMBH-6x1kZi-vcNSZ6-u9MrmJ-v6gfjm-XxJ4jW-6JwTtG-TumZbA-TumZad-2GiyC5\" title=\"Earth\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8638\/16530938850_93fba0e638_z.jpg\" alt=\"Earth\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>geografie<\/strong> [\u02cc\u0263e\u02d0.o\u02d0.\u0263ra\u02d0\u02c8fi] also exists in Dutch. It comes from the French <em>g\u00e9ographie<\/em>, from Latin <em>ge\u014dgraphia<\/em>, from Ancient Greek <em>\u03b3\u03b5\u03c9\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/em> (ge\u014dgraph\u00eda), which all mean geography, from <em>\u03b3\u03b5\u03c9-<\/em> (ge\u014d &#8211; earth) and <em>\u03b3\u03c1\u03ac\u03c6\u03c9<\/em> (gr\u00e1ph\u014d &#8211; to write) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/geografie#Dutch\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I like about Dutch is that there are lots of words like this that come from native roots, rather than being borrowed from Latin and\/or Greek, as they tend to be in English. The meanings of such words may not be immediately obvious, but once I find out what their individual parts mean, I can usually remember them.<\/p>\n<p>Other examples in Dutch include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>artsenijkunde = medicine (&#8220;medical-skill&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>dierkunde = zoology (&#8220;animal-skill&#8221;) &#8211; also zo\u00f6logie<\/li>\n<li>geschiedkunde = history (&#8220;occurence-skill&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>natuurkunde = physics (&#8220;nature-skill&#8221;) &#8211; also fysica<\/li>\n<li>oudheidkunde = archaeology (&#8220;antiquity\/oldness-skill&#8221;) &#8211; also archeologie<\/li>\n<li>sterrenkunde = astronomy (&#8220;star-skill&#8221;) &#8211; also astronomie<\/li>\n<li>taalkunde = linguistics (&#8220;language-skill&#8221;) &#8211; also lingu\u00efstiek or taalwetenschap<\/li>\n<li>wetenschap = science (&#8220;know-scape\/ship&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:Dutch_words_suffixed_with_-kunde\">Wiktionary<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a version of English known as Anglish in which words borrowed from other languages, especially Latin and Greek, have been replaced by words based on English roots. Geography, for example, is <strong>landlore<\/strong>, medicine is <strong>leechcraft<\/strong>, zoology is <strong>deerlore<\/strong>, history is <strong>stear<\/strong> or <strong>yorelore<\/strong>, astronomy is <strong>rodderlore<\/strong>, linguistics is <strong>speechlore<\/strong> and science is <strong>witship<\/strong> or <strong>wittenskip<\/strong>  [<a href=\"https:\/\/anglish.miraheze.org\/wiki\/Wordbook\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other languages that tend to use their own wordhorde to make new words include Icelandic, Czech, Hungarian and Mandarin Chinese.
