It comes from <strong>pan<\/strong> (pan, cooking pot) and <strong>koek<\/strong> (cake, cookie, biscuit, pie).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pan<\/strong> comes from the Middle Dutch <em>panne<\/em> (pan), from the Old Dutch <em>*panna<\/em> (pan), from the Latin <em>panna<\/em>, a contraction of <em>patina<\/em> (a broad, shallow dish; a pan; stewpan; a kind of cake; a crib, manger), from the Ancient Greek <em>\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03b7<\/em> (pat\u00e1n\u0113 &#8211; a kind of flat dish) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/pan#Dutch\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Koek<\/strong> comes from the Middle Dutch <em>coeke<\/em> (cake), from the Old Dutch <em>*kuoko<\/em> (cake), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*k\u014dk\u00f4<\/em> (cake).
