This is cognate with one of the German words for potato &#8211; <strong>Erdapfel<\/strong> [\u02c8e\u02d0\u0250\u032ft\u02cc\u0294a.p\u0361fl\u0329\/], which is used mainly in southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This is also the root of the English word <strong>potato<\/strong>, and similar words in other languages [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/patat\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another German word for potato is <strong>Grundbirne<\/strong> [\u02c8\u0261\u0281\u028ant\u02ccb\u026a\u0281.n\u0259] (ground pear), which is used in Austria. It&#8217;s cognate with the Luxembourgish <strong>Gromper<\/strong> [\u02c8\u0261\u0280ompe\u0280] (potato), the Slovenian <strong>krompir<\/strong> [kr\u0254mp\u00ec\u02d0r] (potato), the Macedonian <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0438\u0440<\/strong> (potato) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Grundbirne#German\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch word <strong>aardpeer<\/strong> means &#8220;earthpear&#8221;, and refers to the Jerusalem artichoke (<em>Helianthus tuberosus<\/em>), a kind of sunflower native to North America [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Jerusalem_artichoke\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The more common German word for potato, <strong>Kartoffel<\/strong> [ka\u0281\u02c8t\u0254f\u0259l], and related words in other languages, comes from the Italian <em>tartufolo<\/em>, a diminutive of <em>tartufo<\/em> (truffle), from the Medieval Latin <em>*territ\u016bberum<\/em> or the Latin <em>terrae t\u016bber<\/em> (tuber of the earth) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Kartoffel#German\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Mandarin Chinese, a potato is a <strong>\u571f\u8c46<\/strong> (t\u01d4d\u00f2u) or &#8220;earth bean&#8221;, at least in Mainland China.
