{"id":19605,"date":"2020-07-31T12:47:19","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T12:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19605"},"modified":"2020-07-31T12:47:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T12:47:21","slug":"endearing-bids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19605","title":{"rendered":"Endearing Bids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An interesting French word I learnt yesterday was <strong>ench\u00e8re<\/strong> [\u0251\u0303.\u0283\u025b\u0281], which means a bid in an auction or sale, or in bridge (the card game) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/ench%C3%A8re#French\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ench\u00e8re<\/strong> comes from <strong>ench\u00e9rir<\/strong>, which means to make more expensive, to bid; to outbid, to make a bid (at auction); to go up (in price), to become more expensive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ench\u00e9rir<\/strong> comes from <strong>cher<\/strong> (dear, dearly) plus a couple of affixes [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/ench%C3%A9rir#French\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cher<\/strong> means dear both in the sense of expensive, and in the sense of beloved, and dearly, as in <strong>payer cher<\/strong> (to pay dearly).
