When I learnt this yesterday I wondered whether it was related to the English word <strong>town<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuin<\/strong> comes from the Middle Dutch <em>tuun<\/em> (hedge), from the Old Dutch <em>t\u016bn<\/em> (an enclosed piece of ground), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*t\u016bn\u0105<\/em> (fence, enclosure), from the Proto-Celtic <em>*d\u016bnom<\/em> (stronghold, rampart) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/tuin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>achtertuin = backyard, back garden<\/li>\n<li>betuinen = to enclose, fence, hedge<\/li>\n<li>dierentuin = zoo<\/li>\n<li>kindertuin = kindergarten<\/li>\n<li>kruidentuin = herb garden<\/li>\n<li>moestuin = vegetable \/ kitchen garden<\/li>\n<li>speeltuin = children&#8217;s playground<\/li>\n<li>tuinen = to practice agriculture or horticulture<\/li>\n<li>tuinier = gardener<\/li>\n<li>tuinieren = gardening<\/li>\n<li>tuincentrum = garden centre<\/li>\n<li>tuinslang = garden hose (&#8220;garden snake&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>voortuin = front yard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the Proto-Germanic word <em>*t\u016bn\u0105<\/em> we also get such words as <strong>town<\/strong>, the German <strong>Zaun<\/strong> (fence), the Icelandic <strong>t\u00fan<\/strong> (hayfield), the Faroese <strong>t\u00fan<\/strong> (forecourt, way between houses, street in a Faroese village), and the Norwegian <strong>tun<\/strong> (courtyard, front yard, farmstead) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/t%C5%ABn%C4%85\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Russian word <strong>\u0442\u044b\u043d<\/strong> (fence, especially one made of twigs) comes from the same root [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic\/tyn%D1%8A\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words for dune in Germanic language possibly come from the same root as well [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/d%C5%ABn%C7%AD\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Directly from the Proto-Celtic word <em>*d\u016bnom<\/em> we get such words as the Irish <strong>d\u00fan<\/strong> (fort, fortress, haven), the Scottish Gaelic <strong>d\u00f9n<\/strong> (fortress, heap, hill), the Manx <strong>doon<\/strong> (fort, fortress, stronghold), the Welsh <strong>dyn<\/strong> (hill, height, fortification) and  <strong>dinas<\/strong> (city, town), and the Cornish <strong>din<\/strong> (fort) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/d%C5%ABnom\">source<\/a>].
