{"id":19407,"date":"2020-07-01T12:40:52","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T12:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19407"},"modified":"2021-04-05T14:20:18","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T14:20:18","slug":"artists-donkeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19407","title":{"rendered":"Artists&#8217; Donkeys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday while preparing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/radio\/?p=1004\">latest episode of the Radio Omniglot podcast<\/a>, which is about Dutch, I found that there are quite a few <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_English_words_of_Dutch_origin\">words of Dutch origin in English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some come directly from Dutch, some via other languages, such as French, and some come via Dutch from other languages.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>avast<\/strong> &#8211; from the Dutch <em>hou vast<\/em> (hold tight)<\/li>\n<li><strong>bluff<\/strong> &#8211; probably from the Dutch <em>bluffen<\/em> (to brag)<\/li>\n<li><strong>booze<\/strong> &#8211; from the Middle Dutch <em>busen<\/em> (to drink to excess)<\/li>\n<li><strong>brandy<\/strong> &#8211; from the Dutch <em>brandewijn<\/em> (&#8220;burnt wine&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><strong>cookie<\/strong> &#8211; from the Dutch <em>koekje<\/em> (little cake)<\/li>\n<li><strong>easel<\/strong> &#8211; from the Dutch <em>(schilders)ezel<\/em> (&#8220;painter&#8217;s donkey&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>iceburg<\/strong> &#8211; from the Dutch <em>ijsberg<\/em> (&#8220;ice mountain&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>knapsack<\/strong> &#8211; from the Middle Dutch <em>knapzak<\/em> (&#8220;snack bag&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>bamboo<\/strong> &#8211; from the Dutch <em>bamboe<\/em>, from the Portuguese <em>bambu<\/em>, from the Malay <em>bambu<\/em>, from the Kannada \u0cac\u0cae\u0ccd\u0cac\u0cc1 (bambu)<\/li>\n<li><strong>cricket<\/strong> (the insect) &#8211; from the Middle English <em>creket\/crykett\/crykette<\/em>, from the Old French <em>crequet\/criquet<\/em> (locust) from <em>criquer<\/em> (to make a cracking sound; creak), from the Middle Dutch <em>kricken<\/em> (to creak,  crack)<\/li>\n<li><strong>cricket<\/strong> (the game) &#8211; perhaps from a Flemish dialect of Dutch <em>met de krik ketsen<\/em> (to chase a ball with a curved stick)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I particularly like <strong>schildersezel<\/strong>, or &#8220;painter&#8217;s donkey&#8221;, for an easel. It&#8217;s perhaps a relative of the clothes horse, which is also known as a drying horse or garment donkey, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clothes_horse\">apparently<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>ezel<\/strong> means donkey, ass, mule, fool, idiot, easel, (work)bench or trestle.
