From the context I can&#8217;t work out if they have different meanings or uses, so I thought I&#8217;d investigate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Familie<\/strong> [f\u0251\u02c8mi.li] means extended family, i.e. parents, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, etc.<\/p>\n<p>It comes from the French <em>famille<\/em> (family), from the Latin <em>familia<\/em> (family, household), from <em>famulus<\/em> (servant, slave)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gezin<\/strong> [\u0263\u0259\u02c8z\u026an] means nucelear family, i.e. parents and children, home or household.<\/p>\n<p>It comes from the Middle Dutch <em>ghesinde<\/em> (companion), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*gasin\u00feij\u0105<\/em>. from <em>*sen\u00fe-\/sin\u00fe-<\/em> (to go, travel; seek, aim), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*sent-<\/em> (to head for, go).
