It comes from <strong>goed<\/strong> (good) and <strong>koop<\/strong> (for sale, buy, purchase), so literally means &#8220;good buy\/purchase&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/dutch-english\/goedkoop\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the English word <strong>cheap<\/strong> comes from the Old English <em>c\u0113ap<\/em> (cattle, purchase, sale, traffic, business, bargain), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*kaupaz\/*kaup\u00f4<\/em> (inn-keeper, merchant), from <em>*kaup\u014dn\u0105\/*kaupijan\u0105<\/em> (to buy, purchase), from the Latin <em>caup\u014d<\/em> (tradesman, innkeeper), which is the same root as the Dutch <strong>koop<\/strong>, and related words in other Germanic languages, such as <strong>Kauf<\/strong> (sale, purchase, buy) in German, and <strong>k\u00f6p<\/strong> (purchase) in Swedish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cheap\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The diminutive of <strong>koop<\/strong> is <strong>koopje<\/strong>, which means bargin, (a) steal or cheap, and in Belgium it means a sale.<\/p>\n<p>Related words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>kopen = to buy, acquire, purchase, take over<\/li>\n<li>koopavond = late opening, late-night shopping<\/li>\n<li>koophandel = commerce<\/li>\n<li>koopjesperiode = seasonal sales<\/li>\n<li>koopkracht = purchasing\/buying power<\/li>\n<li>kooplieden = dealers, merchants<\/li>\n<li>koopman = merchant, businessman<\/li>\n<li>koopmanschap = business, commerce, trade<\/li>\n<li>koopwaar = merchandise, wares<\/li>\n<li>koopwaardig = worthy to buy<\/li>\n<li>uitverkoop = (a) sale, sell-off<\/li>\n<li>verkopen = to sell<\/li>\n<li>koopziek = shopping addiction, shopaholism<\/li>\n<li>miskoop = a bad buy<\/li>\n<li>een kat in de zak kopen = to buy a pig in a poke (&#8220;to buy a cat in a bag&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/dutch-english\/koop\">bab.la<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I like all these Dutch words with double vowels, and there are plenty of them &#8211; they look and sound quite cute to me.
