{"id":19252,"date":"2020-05-27T14:58:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T14:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19252"},"modified":"2020-05-27T15:03:59","modified_gmt":"2020-05-27T15:03:59","slug":"100-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19252","title":{"rendered":"100 years!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I was wishing a friend a happy birthday on Facebook, and as they live in Poland, I decided to do so in Polish, as you do.<\/p>\n<p>So off I went to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/phrases\/birthday.htm\">birthday page on Omniglot<\/a> and found that in Polish birthday greetings include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wszystkiego najlepszego!<\/li>\n<li>Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji urodzin!<\/li>\n<li>Sto lat!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first two look quite formal (and very difficult to pronounce): <strong>wszystkiego najlepszego<\/strong> means \u201call the best\u201d, and <strong>wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji urodzin<\/strong> means \u201call the best on your birthday.<\/p>\n<p>I chose <strong>Sto lat<\/strong>. Which got me thinking about what it means, and that there\u2019s a town in Terry Pratchett\u2019s Discworld books called <a href=\"https:\/\/discworld.fandom.com\/wiki\/Sto_Lat\">Sto Lat<\/a>, and another called Sto Helit. Whenever these names come up, I wonder if they mean something in any round world languages.<\/p>\n<p>After pondering this, I guessed that <strong>sto lat<\/strong> means a hundred years &#8211; I don\u2019t speak Polish, but my knowledge of other Slavic languages (mainly Czech and Russian) helped.
