This seemed a bit upside down, or downside up, so I thought I&#8217;d invesigate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skriva upp<\/strong> means to book, charge, enter, note, put down, set down, take, stick, sign up or sign in [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/swedish-english\/skriva-upp\">source<\/a>], so in this context it&#8217;s being used to mean &#8216;put\/set down&#8217;. A related expression is <strong>skriva upp p\u00e5 lista<\/strong> (&#8220;write up on list&#8221;), or to list.<\/p>\n<p>Other expressions featuring <strong>skriva<\/strong> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>skriva ut<\/strong> (&#8220;write out&#8221;) = to print, draw, check, make out, discharge<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva \u00f6ver<\/strong> (&#8220;write over&#8221;) = to overwrite, replace,<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva under<\/strong> (&#8220;write under&#8221;) = to sign, endorse, approve, subscribe<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva p\u00e5<\/strong> (&#8220;write on&#8221;) = to subscribe, commit, sign in<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva om<\/strong> (&#8220;write about&#8221;) = to profile, rewrite<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva ner<\/strong> (&#8220;write down&#8221;) = to dash off, record, write down<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva ned<\/strong> (&#8220;write down&#8221;) = to bang out, set down, trace, write down. For example, skulle du kunna skriva ned det \u00e5t mig? (Could you write it down for me?)<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva in<\/strong> (&#8220;write in&#8221;) = to key, register, book in, inscribe, pencil in, sign in<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva ihop<\/strong> (&#8220;write together&#8221;) = to scribble, compile<\/li>\n<li><strong>skriva av<\/strong> (&#8220;write of&#8221;) = to duplicate, extract, transcribe, cancel, write off<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/swedish-english\/skriva-upp\">bab.la<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While writing this, I realised that <strong>subscribe<\/strong> literally means &#8220;underwrite&#8221;, from the Latin <em>sub-<\/em> (under) and\u200e <em>scribo<\/em> (write) &#8211; also the root of <strong>skrifa<\/strong>. However, <strong>underwrite<\/strong> means something different: to assume financial responsibility for something, and guarantee it against failure, or to lend support to something [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/underwrite\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In English when you might <strong>write up<\/strong> notes you <strong>wrote down<\/strong> during an interview, making them more complete and detailed, or <strong>write up<\/strong> your diary, bringing it up-to-date. Maybe you&#8217;ll <strong>write off<\/strong> or <strong>write in<\/strong> to a newspaper and ask for your <strong>write-up<\/strong> be published.
