{"id":19070,"date":"2020-04-15T13:56:16","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T13:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19070"},"modified":"2020-04-16T11:54:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T11:54:05","slug":"holding-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=19070","title":{"rendered":"Holding Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When faced with long words in languages like Russian, one thing that helps me remember them is to break them down into their constistuent parts and find out what each part means.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a Russian word that came up in my lessons recently was <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (podder\u017eiv\u00e1t&#8217;) [p\u0250\u02c8d\u02b2\u02d0er\u0290\u0268v\u0259t\u02b2], which means to support, keep up or maintain [<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/russian-english\/%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B4%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B6%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%82%D1%8C\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It comes from <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (podder\u017e\u00e1t&#8217;) &#8211; to support, help up, &amp; <strong>-\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (-ivat&#8217;) &#8211; a verb suffix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> comes from <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434-<\/strong> (pod-) &#8211; under, by, near, &amp; <strong>\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (der\u017e\u00e1t&#8217;) &#8211; to keep, to hold.
