{"id":18991,"date":"2020-03-27T16:35:10","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T16:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18991"},"modified":"2020-03-27T16:35:10","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T16:35:10","slug":"sponge-mushrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18991","title":{"rendered":"Sponge Mushrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Swedish, I learned this week, there are two words for mushroom: <strong>svamp<\/strong> [svamp] (fungus, mushroom, toadstool, sponge) and <strong>champinjon<\/strong> [\u0267amp\u026an\u02c8ju\u02d0n] (mushroom) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/champinjon\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Svamp<\/strong> comes from the Old Swedish <em>svamper<\/em> (fungus, mushroom), from Old Norse <em>svampr \/ sv\u01ebppr<\/em> (sponge, mushroom, ball), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*swammaz \/ swambaz<\/em> (sponge, mushroom, fungus, swamp), which is also the root of the English word <strong>swamp<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/swammaz\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Old English word <em>swamm<\/em> (mushroom, fungus, sponge), and the Middle English <em>swam<\/em> (swamp, muddy pool, bog, marsh; fungus, mushroom), come from the same root as well [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/swamp#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mushroom<\/strong> was borrowed from the Anglo-Norman <em>musherum \/ moscheron<\/em> (mushroom), from the Old French <em>moisseron<\/em> (mushroom), possibly from the Old French <em>mosse \/ moise<\/em> (moss), from the Frankish <em>*mosa<\/em> (moss) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/mushroom\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Champinjon<\/strong> was borrowed from the French <em>champignon<\/em> (mushroom, fungus, accelerator), from the Vulgar Latin <em>*camp\u0101niolus<\/em> (grows in the field), from the Late Latin <em>camp\u0101neus<\/em> (pertaining to fields), from Latin <em>camp\u0101nia<\/em> (level country), which is also the root of the words <strong>campaign<\/strong> and <strong>champagne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently <strong>champinjon<\/strong> is used to refer to mushrooms used as food, and was borrowed into Swedish in 1690 [<a href=\"https:\/\/sv.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/champinjon\">source<\/a>], while <strong>svamp<\/strong> refers to mushrooms and fungi in general.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/perolofforsberg\/37307261945\/in\/photolist-YQHtde-9MVtJC-mqRANa-Yc5e8b-27yGPLn-28SfUnQ-KcXJcB-KhD3Ua-27yGQbk-8HR2p9-bsHMT4-yMCjz6-8F2aZN-YJP4Bb-8F29JL-8BwkhH-gnWV9-yZcmL8-9iHyFh-YBbjsz-8F2aDw-A8Qhr7-4PXaC3-8EY18X-ahRJ1C-4PXaFs-8A2686-ahNVqt-5ocheU-qGjGvP-ahNVDK-ahNUSV-4t1vui-8wFucE-ztxsei-2hx7RG8-cGobgj-H97vh-aB6TJU-5oj2hP-c9XjW5-aB6VVU-5gN19w-5gNbcu-5gHMJR-gnWWJ-2ee3WP1-iDW7nh-4fjMZs-6BbU9N\" title=\"Svamp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4435\/37307261945_b63fc214ff_z.jpg\" alt=\"Svamp\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Swedish, I learned this week, there are two words for mushroom: svamp [svamp] (fungus, mushroom, toadstool, sponge) and champinjon [\u0267amp\u026an\u02c8ju\u02d0n] (mushroom) [source].
