It means 100,000 and is used in the English of India and in other languages spoken in Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma and Pakistan. Lakh comes from the Hindi \u0932\u093e\u0916 (l\u0101kh), which itself comes from the Sanskrit \u0932\u0915\u094d\u0937 (lak\u1e63\u00e1).<\/p>\n<p>A related word is crore (\u0915\u0930\u094b\u0921\u093c in Hindi), which means 100 lakh, or 10 million, is often abbreviated to cr, and appears in the Indian version of <em>Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?<\/em> &#8211; <em>Kaun Banega <strong>Crore<\/strong>pati?<\/em> (Who will be a ten-millionaire?).<\/p>\n<p>The Gujarati equivalents of lakh and crore are \u0ab2\u0abe\u0a96 (l\u0101kh) and \u0a95\u0ab0\u0acb\u0aa1 (karo\u1e0d).<\/p>\n<p>The new dictionary looks really useful, by the way, with monolingual (Gujarati-Gujarati), and bilingual (Gujarati<>English) options, as well as a thesaurus (\u0aac\u0a82\u0aa7\u0abf\u0aaf\u0abe\u0ab0 \u0ab8\u0acd\u0aa5\u0ab3\u0acb), phrases (\u0aa4\u0abe\u0ab3\u0acb), idioms (\u0a9a\u0ac1\u0aa1\u0ac7\u0ab2\u0aa8\u0acb \u0ab5\u0abe\u0a82\u0ab8\u0acb), proverbs (\u0ab8\u0ac1\u0a96\u0aa8\u0ac1\u0a82 \u0aae\u0ac2\u0ab3 \u0ab8\u0a82\u0aa4\u0acb\u0ab7), a spellchecker and other tools and information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s word, lakh, appears in the description of a online Gujarati dictionary.
