It&#8217;s very different to words for shower in other Germanic languages I know, such as <strong>dusch<\/strong> in Swedish, and <strong>Dusche<\/strong> in German, so I thought I&#8217;d investigate it.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/84568447@N00\/2861445928\/in\/photolist-nBaKGV-njYbaD-nzpUqW-birHfT-5mMqg2-5mREbC\" title=\"p132_02\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3170\/2861445928_ec10232291_n.jpg\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\" alt=\"p132_02\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>As well as meaning shower, <strong>bruser<\/strong> also means sprayer or rose (of a watering can). Another word for shower is <strong>brusebad<\/strong> (&#8220;shower-bath&#8221;). The verb <strong>bruse<\/strong> means to fizz, cascade, effervesce, rush, roar or murmur.<\/p>\n<p>In Swedish there is a similar word: <strong>brusa<\/strong>, which means to make noise (<em>like waves, wind, streaming water<\/em>). While in Norwegian <strong>brusa<\/strong> means to fizz (<em>emit bubbles, foam, make a fizzing or rushing sound<\/em>), or to puff up ones feathers.<\/p>\n<p>These words were borrowed from the Middle Low German <em>br\u00fbsen<\/em> (to roar, skim), which is thought to be of onomatopoeic origin.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish word <strong>dusch<\/strong>, the German <strong>Dusche<\/strong>, and the Norwegian <strong>dusj<\/strong>, come  from the French <em>douche<\/em> (shower), from the Italian <em>doccia<\/em> (shower, drainpipe, plaster cast), from the Latin <em>ductus<\/em> (lead, guided), from <em>d\u016bc\u014d<\/em> (I lead, guide).
