{"id":18900,"date":"2020-03-06T16:21:29","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T16:21:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18900"},"modified":"2020-03-10T13:16:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T13:16:26","slug":"overnighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18900","title":{"rendered":"Overnighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If I asked you, &#8220;Where are you overnighting?&#8221;, you might think it a bit strange, except in certain circumstances, but you&#8217;d probably guess that I meant &#8220;Where are you staying (overnight)?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In Swedish, I discovered this week, this wouldn&#8217;t sound strange &#8211; <strong>Var \u00f6vernattar du?<\/strong> is one way to say &#8220;Where are you staying?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The verb <strong>\u00f6vernatta<\/strong> (&#8220;to overnight&#8221;), means to stay overnight or to stay the night. <strong>\u00d6vernattning<\/strong> means a sleepover, overnight or accommodation, and <strong>\u00f6vernattningsstuga<\/strong> means a refuge.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently <strong>\u00f6vernatta<\/strong> is usually used to refer to staying for one night, but sometimes for two of three nights as well.<\/p>\n<p>Other ways to say <strong>to stay<\/strong> in Swedish include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sova \u00f6ver = to stay the night (&#8220;to sleep over&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>stanna (\u00f6ver natten) = to stay (overnight)<\/li>\n<li>sitta inne = to be \/ stay indoors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Scotland if someone asks you &#8220;Where do you stay?&#8221;, or in Scots &#8220;Whaur dae ye stey?&#8221;, they usually mean &#8220;Where do you live (permanently)?&#8221; and not &#8220;Where are you staying (temporarily)?&#8221; When I first heard this, it confused me a bit, but I&#8217;m used to it now. Another way to say this in Scots is &#8220;Whaur dae ye bide?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In Scots <strong>to stey<\/strong> means to stay, stop, dwell, reside, make one&#8217;s home.
