It comes from the Proto-Slavic word <em>*sad\u044a<\/em> (plant, garden).<\/p>\n<p>The word for garden in most other Slavic languages is the same: <em>sad<\/em> in Croatian, Slovenian, Polish, Slovak and Sorbian. There are also similar words in Latvian (<em>sads<\/em>) and Lithuanian (<em>s\u00f5das<\/em>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic\/sad%D1%8A\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The word <em>sad<\/em> also exists in Czech, but just means orchard. The Czech word for garden is <em>zahrada<\/em> [\u02c8za\u0266rada], which comes from <em>za<\/em> (for, in, behind), and <em>hrad<\/em> (castle), from the Proto-Slavic <em>*g\u020frd\u044a<\/em>* (settlement, enclosed place). So <em>zahrada<\/em> could be translated as &#8220;in\/behind the castle&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/hrad\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>*The Proto-Slavic <em>*g\u020frd\u044a<\/em> comes ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*\u01f5\u02b0\u00f3rtos<\/em> (enclosure), which is also the root of the Irish <em>gort<\/em> (wheatfield), the Welsh <em>garth<\/em> (hill, enclosure), the Latin <em>hortus<\/em> (garden), and the English horticulture, yard and garden, and related words in other languages.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/35483547822\/in\/album-72157682990675883\/\" title=\"Powis Castle\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4169\/35483547822_10c74650e5_z.jpg\" alt=\"Powis Castle\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The word for garden in Russian, and also in Belarusian, Ukrainian and Serbian, is \u0441\u0430\u0434 [sat], which also means orchard.
