It comes from Italian <em>ballotta<\/em> (ballot, shot, ball, boiled chestnut), a diminutive of <em>balla<\/em> (bale, bundle).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poll<\/strong> &#8211; a collection of votes, from the Middle English <em>pol(le)<\/em> (scalp, pate), probably from the Middle Dutch <em>pol \/ p\u014dle \/ polle<\/em> (top, summit; head), from Proto-Germanic <em>*pullaz<\/em> (round object, head, top), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*bolno-, *b\u014dwl-<\/em> (orb, round object, bubble), from <em>*bew-<\/em> (to blow, swell).
