{"id":18577,"date":"2019-12-03T21:27:33","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T21:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18577"},"modified":"2019-12-04T15:30:34","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T15:30:34","slug":"random-flowing-slumps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18577","title":{"rendered":"Random Flowing Slumps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the random Swedish words I learnt recently that I rather like is <strong>slumpm\u00e4ssig<\/strong>, which means random, arbitary or haphazard, and isn&#8217;t just <em>en slumpm\u00e4ssig radda bokst\u00e4ver<\/em> (a random jumble of letters).<\/p>\n<p>Some other examples of how it&#8217;s used include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jag skall n\u00e4mna n\u00e5gra saker i slumpm\u00e4ssig ordningsf\u00f6ljd<br \/>\n<em>I would like to list a few issues in no particular order<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Denna utveckling \u00e4r inte slumpm\u00e4ssig<br \/>\n<em>This has not happened by chance<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Related words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>slump = accident, chance, coincidence, happenstance, hazard<\/li>\n<li>slumpa = to randomize<\/li>\n<li>slumpartad = casual, coincidental, fortuitous, serendipitous<\/li>\n<li>slumpartat m\u00f6te = chance encounter<\/li>\n<li>slumpm\u00e4ssigt = random, haphazardly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/swedish-english\/slumpm%C3%A4ssig\">bab.la dictionary<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>slump<\/strong> is possibly related to the Danish and Norwegian word <em>slumpe<\/em> (to happen on by chance), which comes from the Middle Low German <em>slumpen<\/em>, and may be  onomatopoeic in origin [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/slump#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the English word <strong>random<\/strong> comes from the Middle English <em>randoun \/ raundon<\/em> (force, magnitude, haste, intensity), from the Old French <em>randon<\/em>, from <em>randir<\/em> (to run, gallop), from the Frankish <em>*rant \/ *rand<\/em> (run), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*randij\u014d<\/em>, from <em>*rinnan\u0105<\/em> (to run), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*(H)r \u030a-nw-<\/em> (to flow, move, run) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/random\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Which is all a bit random, is it not?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the random Swedish words I learnt recently that I rather like is slumpm\u00e4ssig, which means random, arbitary or haphazard, and isn&#8217;t just en slumpm\u00e4ssig radda bokst\u00e4ver (a random jumble of letters).
