I learnt this week that there are two words in Russian for dream – \u0441\u043e\u043d<\/strong> [son] and \u043c\u0435\u0447\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (m\u025bt\u0283\u02c8t\u032aa). The former refers to the dreams you have when asleep, while the latter refers to dreams as in hopes, wishes or visions.<\/p>\n

If you’re asleep and dreaming, in Russian you ‘see dreams’, or \u0432\u0438\u0434\u0435\u0442\u044c \u0441\u043d\u044b<\/strong> [\u02c8v\u02b2id\u02b2\u026at\u02b2 sn\u0268]. If you’re dreaming of becoming rich or famous, then you use the verb \u043c\u0435\u0447\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> [m\u02b2\u026at\u0361\u0255\u02c8tat\u02b2]. If you have a bad dream or nightmare though, it’s a \u043a\u043e\u0448\u043c\u0430\u0440<\/strong> [ko\u0283\u02c8mar], from the French cauchemar<\/em> (nightmare)<\/p>\n

\u0421\u043e\u043d<\/strong> means sleep or dream, and comes from the Proto-Slavic *s\u044an\u044a<\/em> (sleep, dream), from the Proto-Balto-Slavic *supnas<\/em> (sleep), from Proto-Indo-European *s\u00fapnos<\/em> (dream). This is also the root of words for sleep in North Germanic languages such as Danish (s\u00f8vn<\/em>), Icelandic (svefn<\/em>) and Swedish (s\u00f6mn<\/em>), and the archaic English word sweven<\/strong> (a dream, vision) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n

\u041c\u0435\u0447\u0442\u0430<\/strong> comes from the Proto-Slavic *m\u044c\u010d\u044cta<\/em> (dream), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *meyk-<\/em> (to shimmer), [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n
