{"id":18435,"date":"2019-10-23T12:38:23","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T12:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18435"},"modified":"2019-10-23T12:38:23","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T12:38:23","slug":"ignorance-and-sleep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18435","title":{"rendered":"Ignorance and Sleep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An interesting Russian expression I learnt recently is <strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044c\u0448\u0435 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0435\u0448\u044c &#8211; \u043b\u0443\u0447\u0448\u0435 \u0441\u043f\u0438\u0448\u044c<\/strong> (men&#8217;she znayesh&#8217; &#8211; luchshe spish&#8217;), which means &#8220;the less you know, the better you sleep&#8221;, and is equivalent to the English expression <strong>ignorance is bliss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ignorance is bliss<\/strong> comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Ode_on_a_Distant_Prospect_of_Eton_College\"><em>Ode On A Distant Prospect Of Eton College<\/em><\/a>, a 1742 poem by Thomas Gray, an Englsh poet, in which he wrote &#8220;where ignorance is bliss, &#8216;Tis folly to be wise.&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/ignorance-is-bliss\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>While it might be true that you sleep better if you have less to worry about, I don&#8217;t agree with Thomas Gray about the value of ignorance and the folly of being wise.<\/p>\n<p>Similar sayings include <strong>out of sight, out of mind<\/strong>, and <strong>what you don&#8217;t know can&#8217;t hurt you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What about in other languages?
