It&#8217;s a Scots word that means &#8220;To hesitate, to be uncertain as in recognising a person or object; to boggle, \u201cas a horse does\u201d; to hesitate about clinching a bargain.&#8221; or &#8220;To recognise, esp. after some uncertainty, to discern&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>An example of how it is used is: &#8220;I tartled at him, I could not with certainty recognise him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The related adjective, <strong>tartlesome<\/strong>, means &#8220;disposed to start objections, captious*&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>*Captious [\u02c8k\u00e6p\u0283\u0259s] = &#8220;apt to notice and make much of trivial faults or defects; faultfinding; difficult to please.&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/apt\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/dsl.ac.uk\/entry\/snd\/tartle_v1_n1\">Dictionary of the Scots Language \/ Dictionar o the Scots Leid<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I heard tartle on the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.acast.com\/s\/somethingrhymeswithpurple\/23a61d18-0ca8-4228-bbf1-5e82c1c292db\">Something Rhymes with Purple podcast<\/a>, where it&#8217;s defined as &#8220;to hesitate when introducing someone because you&#8217;ve forgetten their name&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid tartling, I just don&#8217;t use people&#8217;s names, except when necessary.
