{"id":18385,"date":"2019-10-09T13:30:51","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T13:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18385"},"modified":"2019-10-09T13:30:51","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T13:30:51","slug":"grab-it-and-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=18385","title":{"rendered":"Grab it and run!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the Russian words I learnt this week is <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> [\u02c8\u0261rab\u02b2\u026at\u02b2], which sounds like &#8216;grab it&#8217; and means to rob, burgle or pillage.<\/p>\n<p>An example of how it&#8217;s used is: <strong>\u041d\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0437\u044f \u0436\u0435 \u0433\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0431\u0430\u043d\u043a \u0432 \u043f\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0435<\/strong> (You can&#8217;t rob a bank in a dress) &#8211; is this something that often comes up in Russian conversation? [<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/russian-english\/%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B1%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>I wondered if this word is related to the English word <strong>grab<\/strong>, so decided to find out.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B1%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C\">Wiktionary<\/a>, <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> comes from the Proto-Slavic <em>*gr\u00e0biti<\/em> (to grab, seize). This comes either from the Proto-Balto-Slavic <em>*gr\u0101\u02c0b-<\/em>, from Proto-Indo-European <em>*g\u02b0reb<\/em> (to rake). Or from the Proto-Indo-European  <em>*g\u02b0reb\u02b0-<\/em> (to seize).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grab<\/strong> comes from the Middle Dutch <em>grabben<\/em> (to grab), or from the Middle Low German <em>grabben<\/em> (to snap), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*grab-<\/em>, from Proto-Indo-European <em>*g\u02b0reb\u02b0-<\/em>, which is one possible root of <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, so they might be related  [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/grab#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Even if the two words are not related, their similar sound will help me remember the Russian one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the Russian words I learnt this week is \u0433\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c [\u02c8\u0261rab\u02b2\u026at\u02b2], which sounds like &#8216;grab it&#8217; and means to rob, burgle or pillage.
