I learnt this while putting together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/endearment\/russian.htm\">page of terms of endearment in Russian<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<p>It comes from the Proto-Slavic word <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic\/mil%D1%8A\"><em>*mil\u044a<\/em><\/a> (sweet, dear), from the Proto-Indo-European word <em>*meh\u2081y-<\/em> (mild, soft).<\/p>\n<p>The Czech word <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/mil%C3%BD#Czech\"><strong>mil\u00fd<\/strong><\/a> (nice, kind, good, dear, pleasant, sweet; boyfriend) comes from the same root, as do similar words in other Slavic languages, such as the Belarusian <strong>\u043c\u0456\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (sweet, nice), the Bulgarian <strong>\u043c\u0438\u043b<\/strong> (dear), and the Polish <strong>mi\u0142y<\/strong> (nice, pleasant).<\/p>\n<p>The Latin <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/mitis#Latin\"><strong>m\u012btis<\/strong><\/a> (gentle, mild, ripe) comes from the same Proto-Indo-European root, as does the Italian word <strong>mite<\/strong> (mild, moderate, balmy), the Portuguese word <strong>mitigar<\/strong> (to mitigate), the Spanish word <strong>mitigar<\/strong> (to mitigate, alleviate, allay, assuage, quench, soothe), and the English word <strong>mitigate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m would like to put together <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/endearment\/index.htm\">pages of terms of endearment \/ affection<\/a> in other languages.
