{"id":17905,"date":"2019-06-08T21:13:26","date_gmt":"2019-06-08T21:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=17905"},"modified":"2019-06-08T21:13:26","modified_gmt":"2019-06-08T21:13:26","slug":"time-is-pouring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=17905","title":{"rendered":"Time is pouring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week I learnt the Russian expression <strong>\u0434\u043e \u0441\u0438\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0440<\/strong> \u2015 (do sikh por), which means still, hitherto, up to now, thus far, or literally &#8220;until this time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0440<\/strong> comes from <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/strong> (pora &#8211; time, season, weather, period), which appears in such phrases as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0301 \u0438\u0434\u0442\u0438\u0301 (pora idti) = it\u2019s time to go<\/li>\n<li>\u0432 \u0441\u0430\u0301\u043c\u0443\u044e \u043f\u043e\u0301\u0440\u0443 (v samuju poru) = in the nick of time<\/li>\n<li>\u0434\u043e \u043a\u0430\u043a\u0438\u0301\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0440? (do kakikh por?) = how long?<\/li>\n<li>\u0441 \u043a\u0430\u043a\u0438\u0301\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0440? (s kakikh por?) = since when?<\/li>\n<li>\u0434\u043e \u0442\u0435\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0440, \u043f\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0301 (do tekh por, poka) = so long as<\/li>\n<li>\u0441 \u0442\u0435\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0440, \u043a\u0430\u043a (s tekh por, kak) = ever since<\/li>\n<li>\u043d\u0430 \u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0432\u044b\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0445 (na pervykh porakh) = at first<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%D0%BF%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B0#Russian\">Wiktionary<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting that <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/strong> means both time and weather &#8211; some other languages also have one word for both: <em>temps<\/em> in French, <em>amzer<\/em> in Breton, <em>aimsir<\/em> in Irish.
