In my Czech lessons this week I learnt two words that can mean face – obli\u010dej<\/strong> [\u02c8obl\u026at\u0361\u0283\u025bj] and tv\u00e1\u0159<\/strong> [tva\u02d0r\u031d\u030a], which also means cheek. I couldn’t work out why one was used to mean face in some contexts, and the other in other contexts. Can any of you enlighten me?<\/p>\n

Obli\u010dej<\/strong> comes from the Proto-Slavic ob<\/em> + lice<\/em> (face, cheek), which is also the root of the Czech l\u00edc<\/em> (front, face, right side, face side) and l\u00edce<\/em> (cheeks).<\/p>\n

Cognates in other Slavic languages include: Polish oblicze<\/em> (face, character), Russian \u043e\u0431\u043b\u0438\u0447\u044c\u0435<\/em> (image, character, look), and Ukrainian \u043e\u0431\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0447\u0447\u044f<\/em> (face, character) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n

Tv\u00e1\u0159<\/strong> comes from the Proto-Slavic *tvar\u044c<\/em> (creation, creature) [source<\/a>]. Cognates in other Slavic languages include: Polish twarz<\/em> (face), Russian \u0442\u0432\u0430\u0440\u044c<\/em> (creature, being, animal, beast, monster; mean, vile, worthless), and Croatian tvar<\/em> (substance, material) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n
