One of my Russian lessons this week included the word \u0432\u044b\u0437\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> [v\u0268z\u0268\u02c8vat\u02b2], which means to call, cause, summon, send for, and various other things<\/a>. The combination of sounds in this words appeals to me for some reason, which is way I decided to write about it.<\/p>\n You use it when calling for a service, such as the police or an ambulance – \u0412\u044b\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0442\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0438\u044e! = Call the police! – \u0412\u044b\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0438 \u0441\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0443\u044e \u043f\u043e\u043c\u043e\u0449\u044c! = Call an ambulance!<\/p>\n It can also be used to mean to kindle (interest) as in: \u0432\u044b\u0437\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0447\u0435\u0439-\u043b. \u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441 – to kindle sb.’s interest.<\/p>\n It comes from \u0432\u044b-<\/em> [v\u0268] (out, out from) and\u200e \u0437\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/em> [z\u0268\u02c8vat\u02b2], from \u0437\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/em> [zvat\u02b2] (to call, to invite) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n If you’re calling or ringing someone on the phone though, you use a different word – \u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> [zv\u0250\u02c8n\u02b2it\u02b2], which comes from \u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d<\/em> [zvon] (ring, jingle, chime) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n
