{"id":17553,"date":"2019-02-28T18:53:47","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T18:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=17553"},"modified":"2019-02-28T18:53:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T18:53:47","slug":"ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=17553","title":{"rendered":"Ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/tie.gif\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 30px;\" alt=\"Illustration of a tie\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Today I discovered that the Russian word <strong>\u0433\u0430\u043b\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043a<\/strong> [\u02c8\u0261alst\u028ak] (tie, necktie, neckerchief) was borrowed from the German <em>Halstuch<\/em> (tie, scarf, cravat, necktie, neckwear, kerchief, bandana, neckerchief neckcloth), or from the Dutch <em>halsdoek<\/em> (neckerchicef, scarf, shawl).<\/p>\n<p>When words beginning with h are borrowed into Russian, the h becomes \u0433 (g), as there is no h sound in Russian. This is probably why I didn&#8217;t spot the connection between <strong>\u0433\u0430\u043b\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043a<\/strong> and <strong>Halstuch<\/strong> before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Halstuch<\/strong> comes from <em>Hals<\/em> (tail, stem, cervix neck, throat) and <em>Tuch<\/em> (cloth, sheet, square, blanket, drape, kerchief, towel, scarf, dishcloth).<\/p>\n<p>There are quite a few other <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:Russian_terms_borrowed_from_German\">Russian words borrowed from German<\/a>, including <strong>\u0432\u0430\u0445\u0442\u0451\u0440<\/strong> (porter, janitor, watchman) &#8211; from <em>W\u00e4chter<\/em>, <strong>\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u043e\u0444\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (potatoes) &#8211; from <em>Kartoffel<\/em>, and <strong>\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0440<\/strong> (keyboard instrument) &#8211; from <em>Klavier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%D0%B3%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%81%D1%82%D1%83%D0%BA#Russian\">Wiktionary<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/german-english\/halstuch\">bab.la<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I discovered that the Russian word \u0433\u0430\u043b\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043a [\u02c8\u0261alst\u028ak] (tie, necktie, neckerchief) was borrowed from the German Halstuch (tie, scarf, cravat, necktie, neckwear, kerchief, bandana, neckerchief neckcloth), or from the Dutch halsdoek (neckerchicef, scarf, shawl).
