{"id":17231,"date":"2018-12-14T19:22:28","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T18:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=17231"},"modified":"2018-12-14T19:22:28","modified_gmt":"2018-12-14T18:22:28","slug":"just-keep-plugging-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=17231","title":{"rendered":"Just keep plugging away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/plugs.gif\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 50px;\" alt=\"Keep plugging away!\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>To plug away at something<\/strong> means &#8220;to move or work doggedly and persistently&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/plug\">source<\/a>] or &#8220;to continue doing something even though it is difficult or boring&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/plug%20away\">source<\/a>], as in &#8220;He kept plugging away at his Russian, even though he didn&#8217;t seem to be making much progress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I learnt this week that there is a similar expression in Swedish &#8211; <strong>att plugga<\/strong> &#8211; which means &#8220;to study, to bone up, to cram, to grind&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/swedish-english\/plugga\">source<\/a>], and also &#8220;to plug, to stop with a plug; to read up, to study intensively, as in preparing for a test; to promote&#8221;, as in to plug a book [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/plugga\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In my Swedish lessons, <strong>att plugga<\/strong> is defined as meaning &#8220;to study (anywhere, informal)&#8221;, while <strong>att studera<\/strong> means &#8220;to study (at university, formal)&#8221;  [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.memrise.com\/course\/1135112\/swedish-3\/16\/\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/swedish-english\/plugga\">bab.la dictionary<\/a> however, it seems that <strong>att plugga<\/strong> can also be used to refer to university studies.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Du beh\u00f6ver inte plugga konsthistoria f\u00f6r att uppskatta konst = You don&#8217;t have to study Art History to appreciate art<\/li>\n<li>plugga till magister = to do a Master&#8217;s (degree)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>att studera<\/strong> is defined as &#8220;to study, to do, to examine,  to get up, to pore&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/swedish-english\/studera\">source<\/a>]. It can also mean &#8220;to investigate&#8221;  [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/studera#Swedish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Is <strong>studera<\/strong> used in more formal language than <strong>plugga<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Is there a Swedish equivalent of &#8216;Keep plugging away&#8217;?<\/p>\n<p>There are various ways to say you&#8217;re studying something in English as well. If you&#8217;re at a university in the UK, you might say &#8220;I&#8217;m studying Quantum Knitting&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;m doing a degree in Basket Weaving&#8221;. Students Oxford or Cambridge Universities might say &#8220;I&#8217;m reading Toffology&#8221;.
